He was named after his father's brother Gennaro ("Gennarino") (24 May 1887 - 20 March 1929), who had red hair. My father never knew how he got the name James. (James in Italian is Giacomo, not Gennaro.) However, in Southern Italy a very common nickname for Gennaro is Gennì. Gennì became Jimmy became James.
Gennaro was born at 1 Maverick St. in East Boston. He was the youngest of 9; his father Carmine was 47 when he was born. Coincidentally, Carmine's father Giovanni was 47 when Carmine was born. Thus, Gennaro's grandfather was 94 years older than he (born 1843).
