Ancestors of Leonardo Antonino CIAMPA

Fifth Generation

16. Angelo (Angelo Raffaele) CIAMPA was born on 9 Mar 1815 in Montefalcione, AV (Italy). He died on 1 Sep 1899 in Montefalcione, AV (Italy). Angelo married Serafina MARTIGNETTI on 11 Jun 1838 in Montefalcione (AV), Italy. [Parents]

On his death certificate his name is spelled "Angiolo Raffaele."  On his wife Serafina's death certificate he was listed as "Angelo" (without Raffaele). He was called "Angelo." Angelo was the first cousin of Raffaele Ciampa b. 1830; their mothers were sisters.

Angelo outlived his son Giovanni and his granddaughter Mariuccia by 3 years.  His wife Serafina predeceased him by 18 years.

Angelo was a "possidente" (landowner).

Angelo & Serafina had at least five sons:

    * Giuseppantonio (Giuseppe)(20 Oct 1841 - 11 Apr 1892).  Married Carolina Pagliuca (born 1838/9) on 5 Sep 1864. They had at least five children:
          ** Serafina I (5 Aug 1865 - 10 June 1874, age 9 years)
         ** Angelo Raffaele I (14-19 Feb 1873, age 5 days)
** Angelo Raffaele II (16 May 1874). His first wife was Antonia Petruzziello (from Pratola Serra), whom he married in Montefalcione on 13 Dec 1900. (They already had an illegitimate four-month-old child named Giuseppe!) Their last child, Carolina, died on 24 Aug 1915 at age 2. Antonia herself died less than two months later (10 Nov 1915). Only six months after that, Angelo Raffaele married his second wife, Angelamaria Ruberto, in Montefalcione on 15 June 1916.
** Serafina II (1 Feb 1876 - 17 Jan 1908). Married Francescantonio Vardaro on 28 Jan 1907 but, tragically, she died less than a year later, dying 15 days after the birth of their only child, Sabato Vardaro.
** Feliciano (10 May 1878 - 10 Feb 1948 in Massachusetts), who lived in Franklin, MA, with his wife Maria Carmela Di Giovanni. My grandfather Carmine (Feliciano's first cousin) and my father used to visit Feliciano's family in Franklin.
    * Giovanni, born 1843 (my great-grandfather)
    * Sabato Antonio, born 18 Oct 1845. Married his first cousin Teresa Martignetti on 20 Jan 1873. Teresa was the daughter of Serafina's brother Tommaso Martignetti & Carolina Baldassarre.
    * Tommaso, died 18 Jan 1848 at age 18 days. (Andrea Ciampa and Vincenzo Ciampa (born c. 1815) were listed as relatives.)
    * Emanuele, died 12 Feb 1849 at 8 days old. (Andrea Ciampa and Fiorentino Ciampa (c. 1818) were listed as relatives.)

17. Serafina MARTIGNETTI was born on 10 Feb 1809 in Montefalcione, AV (Italy). She died on 16 Mar 1881 in Montefalcione, AV (Italy). [Parents]

Serafina had a brother Tommaso Martignetti (born c. 1804) who married Carolina Baldassarre (born c. 1805) in Montefalcione on 23 Aug 1832. Serafina's son Sabato Antonio married Tommaso's daughter Teresa (Sabato's first cousin) in 1873. Besides Teresa, Tommaso & Carolina had a son Antonio (b. 24 May 1834), who was the father of Federigo (b. 1870) who married my great-aunt (his second cousin) Rosa Ciampa, in 1894.

[Child]

18. Pasquale Raffaele TODINO was born on 24 May 1822 in Montefalcione (AV), Italy. He died on 22 Mar 1885 in Montefalcione, AV (Italy). Pasquale married Maria Rosa TRODELLA on 14 Sep 1850 in Montefalcione, AV (Italy). [Parents]

Raffaele was 13 years younger than his wife Maria Rosa.  When Maria Rosa was 42, she bore their only child, my great-grandmother Teresa.

According to Teresa's birth certificate (1851), Raffaele was a "bracciale" (laborer).  However, according to Teresa's marriage certificate (1869) and Raffaele's own death certificate (1885), he was a "possidente" (land-owner).

On his birth certificate, Raffaele was listed as "Pasquale Raffaele." (This made him difficult to find, whereas the index was alphabetical by FIRST name, not last!) He was Pasquale Raffaele also on his marriage certificate.

19. Maria Rosa TRODELLA was born on 30 Jun 1811 in Lapio, AV (Italy). She died on 19 Jan 1892 in Montefalcione, AV (Italy). [Parents]

On her daughter Teresa's birth and marriage certificates, she is called Angela Rosa.  On another document she is called Angela Maria.  However, on her own birth certificate, her death certificate, and her husbands' death certificates, she is Maria Rosa.

Maria Rosa was 11 years older than Raffaele.

Maria Rosa's first husband was Daniele d'Amore (son of Ferdinando d'Amore & Elisabetta Mauriello), a landowner, born in Montefalcione 1798/1799. They were married in Lapio on 18 Apr 1842. However he died in Montefalcione only two years later, 27 June 1844, at age 45. They had one child, Fortunato D'Amore, born Lapio 25 Sept 1843.

Maria Rosa had an older sister, also named Maria Rosa, born in Lapio on 1 Jun 1809 but died only 45 days later, on 16 July. (I am grateful to my cousin Susan in Colorado for this information.)

[Child]

20. Raffaele (Angelo Raffaele) CIAMPA was born on 29 Jan 1830 in Montefalcione (AV). He died on 6 Nov 1904 in Montefalcione (AV), Italy. Raffaele married Angela Giuseppa FABRIZIO on 25 Sep 1852 in Montefalcione (AV), Italy. [Parents]

On his birth, marriage, and death certificates he is listed as Angelo Raffaele Ciampa.  However, he was called Raffaele. Raffaele was the first cousin of Angelo Ciampa b. 1815; their mothers were sisters.

On his marriage certificate, Raffaele is listed as a "proprietario" (property owner).

Raffaele & Giuseppina were married in Montefalcione on 25 September 1852. They had at least four children:

*Ignazio (born Montefalcione 11 March 1854 - died Montefalcione 22 Sep 1933). One of the first members of my family to come to America.  Ignazio arrived at Ellis Island on the ship Columbia on April 12, 1894. He returned to Italy in 1900, then came back to Boston (not New York) in 1903. Ignazio came to Boston and lived at 27 North St., later 30 Prince St. Ignazio later returned to Italy. Ignazio married Carmela Colella in Montemiletto (where she was from), and had at least nine children, including:
**Angelo Raffaele (born Montefalcione 10 July 1876 - died East Boston 7 April 1945). Married Consiglia ("Celia") Nasta (1883-1950) in 1902. (Not to be confused with the Raffaele Ciampa who married Consiglia Maffeo and lived on Salem St.!) He never changed his name to Ralph; he was always Raffaele. Raffaele was a brass bed maker and a brass finisher. He lived on Liverpool St. in East Boston and ran the "Liverpool Brass Finishing Co." By 1930 Raffaele & Celia were living on Prescott St.  They had 7 children (all born in Boston): Carmela, Ignazio (Ignatius), Francesco (Frank), Anthony Charles, Pasqualina (Lena), Pellegrino (William), and Anna (Nina). (For some reason there were no known children born between Frank in 1907 and Charlie in 1919.) Ignatius was born on 29 Nov 1904. Like his father he was a brass polisher. He was the witness for my grandfather Carmine's petition for citizenship in 1927. Ignatius married Flora Marconi; their children included Richard Champa (1933-1999), who was a well-known teacher in Revere, MA. Anthony Charles ("Charlie") Ciampa (1919-2006) lived in Brockton, MA, and was the unofficial family historian.
**Gaetano (born Montefalcione 5 Oct 1877 - died Somerville, MA, April 1947). Arrived Ellis Island 9 Mar 1898. Married Carolina DiGiovanni (born Montefalcione 1877) in Boston 15 Jul 1903. Gaetano & Carolina had 6 children: Assunta, Raffaele (1905-1907), Antonietta, Raffaele Federico ("Fred")(1909-1976), Carmela, and Anthony R. Ciampa (1917-1994) who lived in Stoneham, MA (whom I knew).
**Feliciano (born 13 July 1879). Married Luisa ("Luisella")(née Ciampa)(1888-1955)+. Feliciano came to America in 1895. He founded the Standard Box Spring Co. in 1922.  Feliciano & Luisa had 7 children. Their son Fred A. Ciampa (1921-2008) and his wife Regina were very close to our family and present at all the extended family gatherings.
    **Assunta I (20-24 Oct 1881)
**Gennaro (born 9 Oct 1882). Gennaro married Maria Grazia D'Amore on 7 Jan 1904. They came to Boston in 1909. Maria Grazia evidently died before 1924; on 7 Jan 1924 Gennaro married Angela Cataldo figlia di Luigi in Boston. Gennaro & Maria Grazia's children included: 1. Ignazio, born 19 July 1904 in Montefalcione, died in action 9 Jan 1941 in Africa (WWII). Ignazio's wife and children subsequently moved East Boston. 2. Raffaele, born Montefalcione 11 Aug 1906 3. Gaetano, born Montefalcione 11 July 1908
     **Assunta II (1-10 March 1884)
    **Angela (6-8 July 1885)
    **Pasqualina (born 26 Dec 1888)
    **Beniamino (9-20 Feb 1893)

* Federigo (born 1856) -- my great-grandfather

* Pasqualina (born 8 April 1860. Married Angelo Maria Moschella from San Potito Ultra on 15 Dec 1883 in Montefalcione. Lived in San Potito Ultra; had at least one child, Rocco Luigi Maria Moschella (born 18 Sep 1884 San Potito Ultra, came to NY via Ellis Island 1909).

* Antonio (born Montefalcione 2 Nov 1864 - died Franklin, MA, 1934). Antonio was married to Luigia De Feo (1866-1924) of Atripalda (AV). Antonio & Luigia were married in 1885. Antonio came through Ellis Island in 1899.  (On the same ship was a Feliciano Ciampa, no relation.++)  They had at least 7 children. In 1906 they left Montefalcione and moved to Franklin, MA, where they died.

+ = Luisella was my cousin's cousin.  She was the daughter of Felice Antonio Ciampa (b. 1862), who was the son of Carmine Ciampa (b. 1833). Carmine married Luisa Martignetti (b. 1836), who had a daughter Clementina Ciampa (b. 1863). Clementina was Luisella's aunt. Clementina married Gennaro Ciampa (b. 1863), the  youngest of the 13(!) children of Andrea Ciampa & Maria D'Amore. Clementina & Gennaro's daughter (Luisella's first cousin) was Olimpia Ciampa (b. 1897), who married my cousin Antonio Martignetti (1895-1966), son of Federigo Martignetti & my aunt Rosina Ciampa.

++ = This Feliciano Ciampa was not related to Antonio. However, he may be distantly related through my paternal grandfather.  Feliciano (son of Vincenzo Ciampa & Giovanna Di Giovanni) was born in Montefalcione on 8 July 1853. Feliciano married Maria Ciampa (b. 7 Oct 1860, daughter of Pellegrino Ciampa & Angelamaria Fiorentino, sister of Salvatore, Raffaela, et al.) in Montefalcione on 13 Sep 1881. Feliciano arrived in Ellis Island in 1904 with his son Angelo Raffaele (born c. 1890). Feliciano's other son Domenico (b. 29 Dec 1883) was living on Salem St.  Domenico married Antonia Polcaro (b. 26 Aug 1888) in Sacred Heart Church in Boston on 13 September 1908. Feliciano's brother Raffaele (born 2 Sep 1856) arrived in Ellis Island in 1900.

21. Angela Giuseppa FABRIZIO was born on 22 Jun 1829 in Montefalcione (AV). She died after 1904. [Parents]

On her marriage certificate she is listed as Angela Giuseppa di Fabrizio. She was called Giuseppa or Giuseppina. On her birth certificate, and her husband's death certificate, she is listed as Angela Giuseppa Fabrizio. On her husband's death certificate he was listed as "marito," not "vedovo," di Giuseppa. Thus, she was still alive in 1904. I cannot find her death certificate, either in Montefalcione, in San Potito Ultra (where her daughter Pasqualina lived), or in the United States. The Montefalcione death records for 1907 are missing, as are the San Potito Ultra death records for 1909.

22. Domenico DEANGELIS was born on 3 Mar 1822 in Torre le Nocelle, AV (Italy). He died on 13 Aug 1878 in Torre le Nocelle, AV (Italy). Domenico married Carolina MUSTO on 29 Mar 1849 in Montemiletto, AV (Italy). [Parents]

Domenico & Carolina were married in Montemiletto and lived in Torre le Nocelle. They had at least eight children (all born in Torre):

Anella (born 15 Jan 1850)
Angelo (born 15 Dec 1851)
Filomena (born 10 Nov 1854)
Gennaro (born 20 Feb 1857)

24. Leonardo MAGGIO was born on 10 Nov 1820 in Salemi, TP (Italy). He died on 13 Mar 1863 in Salemi, TP (Italy). Leonardo married Maria (di Antonino) PIAZZA on 24 Nov 1851 in S. Maria Della Catena, Salemi. [Parents]

Leonardo Maggio was a contadino, living on Via Santo Antonio in Salemi (no longer extant -- see note on Vita Renda).  His future wife, Maria Piazza, lived on the same street.

Leonardo died on 13 Mar 1863, at age 42.  His son Antonino was only two years old.  His father Vito outlived him by 6 years.

Leonardo's death certificate has several errors. His age is listed as 41, instead of 42. And his father Vito is listed as "fu," or "deceased." He was still alive!

Leonardo & Maria had several children:
* Vito Giuseppe - born Salemi 19 Oct 1852, died Marsala 2 Apr 1916. (His wife was Maria Rosa Sigismondo, from Marsala.)
* Antonino I - born Salemi 21 June 1855, died there 22 Mar 1857 at age 2
* Antonino II - my great-grandfather
* Maria Antonia - born Salemi c. 1866 (Her husband was Cristofaro Tripoli. NOTE Maria & Cristofaro's son Francesco (Frank) married Antonino's daughter Antonina (Annie) in 1915 at Our Lady of Pompeii in Boston. Frank & Annie had five children, who were close to our family.)

25. Maria (di Antonino) PIAZZA was born in 1817/1823 in Salemi, TP (Italy). She died on 29 Jul 1888 in Salemi, TP (Italy). [Parents]

Maria was probably born sometime between 1817 and 1823.  Her son Antonino's birth certificate (1860), said she was 37 (thus born c. 1823). Her marriage certificate (1851) said she was 30 (thus born c. 1821). Her death certificate (1888) said she was 70 (thus born c. 1818). The latter says that she lived on the same street as the groom, Via Santo Antonio (no longer extant -- see note on Vita Renda).  She died on Via Sant'Antonio 49.

26. Vincenzo RENDA was born on 23 Jul 1841 in Salemi, TP (Italy). He was christened on 23 Jul 1841 in Chiesa di San Nicolò, Salemi. He died on 11 Jan 1914 in Salemi, TP (Italy). Vincenzo married Maria GANDOLFO on 21 Nov 1870 in Salemi, TP (Italy). [Parents]

After the death of his first wife, Vincenzo married Francesca Lumia in Salemi on 29 April 1882.

27. Maria GANDOLFO was born on 19 Feb 1850 in Salemi, TP (Italy). She died on 2 Jun 1881 in Salemi, TP (Italy). [Parents]

Maria was a "filandaia" (spinner, weaver). She died at age 31. Her daughter Vita was only 8.

28. Giuseppe SIRAGUSA was born on 13 Oct 1850 in Mineo, CT (Italy). He was christened on 13 Oct 1850 in Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore, Mineo. He died on 17 Aug 1934 in Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore, Mineo. Giuseppe married Grazia Maria PACI on 8 Dec 1875 in Mineo, CT (Italy). [Parents]

Giuseppe ("Beppo") & Grazia had seven children:

1. Agrippino ("Pino") (14 June 1879 - 19??) -- married Sebastiana ("Anna") Vitale
    * Pino & Anna married in Mineo in 1903. They moved to East Boston and lived on 34 Haynes St.
Pino & Anna's daughter, Josephine ("Pina") Siracusa (1911-1991), wrote a self-published Sicilian cookbook.
Pina lived in Holiday, Florida, with her husband, Stephen Harcarik.
2. Mario (my great-grandfather) -- married Emmanuela Spitalieri
3. Luigi (23 Feb 1883 - 19??) -- married Giovanna ("Genì", Jennie)
    * Luigi & Genì lived on 155 London St. in East Boston. One of Luigi & Genì's children
was Alberto (Albert, or "Red")(1919-1991), who was married to my cousin Angie (born
      Angela Modica)(1922-2017).

29. Grazia Maria PACI was born in Jul 1856 in Mineo (CT), Italy. She was christened on 3 Jul 1856 in Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore, Mineo (CT). She died on 24 Jul 1942 in Mineo (CT), Italy. [Parents]

My grandmother was named after her.  Her official name was Orazia ("Horatia" in the Latin church records) but was called Grazia.

Grazia was baptized on 3 July, so probably 2 July was her birthday.

Grazia died at age 86, outliving her son Mario by 16 years.

30. Nunzio Jr. SPITALIERI was born on 6 Nov 1862 in Bronte, CT (Italy). He died in 1914/1930 in Argentina. Nunzio married Antonia (Antonietta) CARCÒ on 2 Aug 1884 in Mineo, CT (Italy). [Parents]

Nunzio died in Argentina (of pneumonia, it is said) before 9 December 1930, the date that his wife Antonia (my grandmother’s grandmother) arrived in Ellis Island. In the early 1900s Nunzio went to Argentina (probably Buenos Aires) for work. It is believed he never returned to Sicily. He adopted two Argentine boys, Vincente & José Marmo. Apparently his son-in-law Mario Siragusa (my great-grandfather) adopted them from him and brought them to Mineo (where a photo was taken c. 1911-12). Mario did not take the boys to America in 1914. They went back to Argentina, but it is not known who brought them there or with him they lived (possibly Nunzio, if he was still alive).

Nunzio and Antonia had five children, all girls:

1. Gaetana (“Tatà”) (born Mineo 19 June 1886 – died Portland, Maine 30 Jan 1960). Married Giuseppe La Fava (born Caltagirone (not Mineo) 3 Dec 1885 – died Portland, ME 3 Sep 1943). Giuseppe & Gaetana were married in Mineo 14 Feb 1904. They left Sicily in 1908. They lived in Portland, ME. They ran a grocery story at 72 India St., and lived next door at 137 Newbury St. His name was sometimes anglicized as Lafavore or Lafavour.

2. Emmanuela (“Nané”)(my great-grandmother) (born Mineo 19 Jun 1888 – died Boston 10 Jul 1938) Sometimes called Anna. Tombstone reads Anna Siracusa. Married Mario Siragusa (born Mineo 27 Oct 1882 – died Boston 19 Oct 1926). Mario & Emmanuela were married in Mineo on 14 April 1906.

3. Giuseppa (“Beppina”) (born Mineo 4 Jan 1891 – died Boston 20 Jun 1962) Married Antonino (Antonio) Modica (born Mineo 21 Jan 1884 – died Boston 6 Feb 1969). Antonio & Giuseppa were married in Mineo 27 June 1908. They arrived at Ellis Island 7 May 1909.

4. Maria (“Maruzzedda”) (born Mineo 20 Nov. 1895 – died Boston 14 Nov 1967) Married Mario Modica, brother of Antonino (born Mineo 1885/86 – died Boston 5 Nov 1959). Mario & Maria were married in Boston 14 Apr 1914. One of Mario & Maria's children was Angela ("Angie"), who was a beloved cousin in our family. She married (but later divorced) another first cousin of my grandmother, Alberto ("Red") Siracusa (1919-1991). Angie was the last of my grandmother's first cousins to die, passing away on 27 Nov 2017 at age 95.

5. Concetta (“Angiuzza” - in America also called Angie)(born Mineo 22 Mar 1898 – died Boston 17 Aug 1984) Married Antonio Camiolo (born Mineo 2 Feb 1889 – died Boston 14 Sep 1977). He arrived Boston (not Ellis Island) 24 Mar 1910. She arrived in Ellis Island three years later, 17 Nov 1913.  They were married in Boston 14 Feb 1915.  Zaza Angiuzza was the only of the 5 Spitalieri sisters that I ever met.  She attended my grandparents’ 50th wedding anniversary (24 June 1984) and died less than 2 months later.

31. Antonia (Antonietta) CARCÒ was born on 5 Apr 1866 in Mineo, CT (Italy). She was christened on 8 Apr 1866 in Chiesa di Sant'Agrippina, Mineo (CT). She died on 5 Nov 1936 in Boston, MA. [Parents]

Antonietta was my grandmother's grandmother.  She arrived in New York on the ship "Roma" on 9 December 1930.  My grandmother and her mother lived with Antonietta in East Boston.  My grandmother referred to her grandmother as "Mamma Tatò."
